Our Throw Away Society

We aren't meant to keep anything anymore. We live in a world where it's easier to throw appliances out and upgrade rather than get them fixed. In fact, it's often cheaper to do so.
We can't keep anything for more than a couple of years as technology constantly improves. Nothing lasts.
I recently saw an article about Apple upgrading their technologies which would see the iPhone 5 and 5C become completely redundant. Those phones would no longer be able to update and apps would no longer be compatible. How ridiculous!

In generations past things like fridges and washing machines would last over 20 years. If they broke down you would simply get them fixed and they would run smoothly for another decade. My grandparents home is full of household items with history. Everything in mine is a couple of years old and will need replacing in a few more.
I get that technology is a wonderful thing, I really do. I appreciate how "easy" it is for us young ones with Google at our fingertips.
But, we need to start looking at ways we can recycle these technologies. There will come a time when there isn't enough land to put things into landfill and eventually the world will be full of redundant technological appliances.
I don't have the answer but I think we need to work hard to find some sort of solution to this ever growing problem.
