What is it about State of Origin?

Why do we get so excited for three 80-minute games of NRL?

I don’t know about any of you but this last week has been a frenzy of #QLDER and thinking about how many sleeps it would be until I could finally put on my Maroons jersey.

In the lead up to Wednesday nights clash I was all over the Origin coverage, watching the interviews on every social media platform and news bulletin. I was slightly terrified that our boy, Cooper Cronk may be ruled out due to an ankle injury but had hope that he would pull through.

It was probably the most excited I have been for game one, knowing that it is a mere three weeks until I get to sit in Suncorp Stadium and see the action for myself.

As the boys ran on to the field I was nervous, like actual butterflies. I honestly don’t know how the professionals cope with that immense pressure.

Sadly, I felt a little disappointed. I know we won but I spent the whole match expecting the Blues to get one up on us and score a try. It was an unsettled 80 minutes and to NSW’s credit it’s the best I’ve seen them play in many years.

I personally think Sam Thaiday summed it up perfectly as he described the win as “a bit like losing your virginity — it wasn’t nice but we got the job done”.

It has caused much controversy but I think it’s a refreshing take on an otherwise pretty dull game. He is one of few sportsmen that lighten the commentary and hats off to him for showing a bit of personality in his interview. I think we need more people like that on our TV screens.

Massive congratulations to Kevvie Walters who has taken on a massive task of filling Mal’s shoes. Our two new comers also stood up and were ready for the challenge, proving their worth in the selection process. And as Cameron Smith achieved his 37th game I think all Queenslanders are proud to have him as our Skipper.

But I am very interested in why you do or don’t eat in to the massive event that is State of Origin. Please let me know what it is about this game that gets you fired up and screaming at your TV’s.
