The Haircut

It’s funny how something so trivial can become such a big deal. I’m going to sound extremely superficial this week and talk about the monumental decision to cut my hair.
I had already booked the appointment and was going to get my usual trim when my sister suggested I get a more dramatic cut. I then started the inevitable celebrity hairstyle inspiration scroll through Google images.
Once I had found the perfect pic of Kim K I had to get it approved by at least two impartial persons. It seemed the hairstyle was a winner and my luscious locks would be chopped off in no time.

Of course I had to have the very serious “I hope you don’t regret this” conversation with my Mum. But, even still she assured me that “this is your decision, I just hope you don’t end up in tears”.
The few days that followed saw me show the desired haircut to a bunch of other third parties, most of which decided I was going to rock the new look. I kept scrolling through those same Google results reassuring myself that if I really hated it, it was only hair and would eventually grow back.
The thing about my long hair (and by that I mean I could basically wipe my bum with it, so to speak) was that it was dead, ratty and needed some serious life put back into it. I’d realised I never put any effort into anyway and figured a new style would do me the world of good.
It’s kind of sad to admit I was a little nervous/excited on the morning of the cut and basically had those same butterflies as you do on your first day of school. I let my Mum say goodbye to the dry and lifeless spilt ends and drove to the salon.
There was really no backing out.
As I relayed the style to my hairdresser she was excited for the change and I was too. After waiting for my colour to set and enjoying the scalp massage it was time to prep the scissors.
We agreed on a length and she started to snip. There was a distinct point when my hairdresser told me to look away as she pulled my hair up and took about four inches off. But, I remained focused on the mirror and said goodbye to the dead ends that remained heaped in a pile on the floor.
The result?
I am very happy with my new look and know that it will be so much easier to upkeep. I opted with that “long bob” style that all the celebs are rocking and feel very on trend.
I would highly recommend biting the bullet and taking that risk. You never know you might be able to walk out of the salon and actually say thank you without gritting your teeth and pretending to be okay with the result.
