What's a Social Life?

Whilst I’m on mid-semester break I thought it would be appropriate to delve into the topic of my rather mundane social life. As a 19-year-old you would assume I am in my prime, living it up in the clubs and spending more time with my friends than family. The sad truth is that I’m home rather than away (yes, I am trying to refer to my favourite TV show). At present, my weekends are divided into time spent at work and in my bedroom, either to sleep, study or wallow in self-pity. As my friends get invites to exclusive clubs and apply their fake eyelashes, I am usually in the comfort of my pajama’s and in front of my laptop. I think the real issue with all of this is the fact that my parents actually leave the house more than me.

Over Easter they travelled to the Gold Coast with their best friends, heading to luxurious restaurants and spending my inheritance at the Casino (okay, that is a little bit of an exaggeration but you get my point). I however, spent the four days dancing with Bindi (yeah I work at Australia Zoo), selling fluffy stuffed crocodiles and coming home to baskets of washing, ironing and stacks of dirty dishes. I think we all know who the real winner is here. I mean yes I did earn a nice pay packet as a result of the public holiday rate but swapping khaki’s for stilettos would have been nice.

I suppose I can’t really complain and although I was super jealous of my parents, I know that my hard work will eventually pay off. I was lucky enough to own my car at 17 and am studying a degree that I am passionate about so I am probably ahead of people my age. Life’s about knuckling down to get what you want, it just means missing out on a few holidays to do it.
